Gas safety isn’t just for adults, the entire household should know what to do in case of a leak. Teaching children and family members how to recognize the signs of natural gas and how to respond calmly can save lives.

The three biggest indicators of a leak are:

  • Smell: the distinct rotten egg odor.

  • Sound: hissing or whistling near gas lines.

  • Sight: dead vegetation, bubbling in puddles, or unusual dust blowing.

If your family smells, hears, or sees these signs, the rule is simple: stop what you’re doing, leave the home, and call 911 from outside.

Show your children where natural gas alarms are placed in your home, and explain what the sound means. Alarms provide extra protection, especially at night or when leaks are harder to notice. Including alarms in your family evacuation drill ensures everyone understands how to react if it goes off.

Safety is strongest when it’s shared...and that includes every member of your family.

Gas Safety Is a Shared Responsibility.
