DeeDee’s Gas Detective Guide: Crack the Case in 7 Simple Steps
Follow these steps to be a true Gas Safety Detective!

STEP 1
Know What Natural Gas Is
Plan Ahead
Every good detective starts by learning about the case. DeeDee knows that natural gas helps cook your food and heat your home, but it can be dangerous if it leaks. You might find natural gas at work in your home in things like stoves, ovens, water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, and clothes dryers.
Stay Alert
Every great detective has special tools to help solve the case. Most of DeeDee’s tools are ones you already have. Use your nose, ears, and eyes to spot the clues of a gas leak.
Your Nose – Natural gas smells like rotten eggs.
Your Ears – Listen for a hissing or blowing sound near gas appliances or pipes.
Your Eyes – Look for bubbling water, dirt blowing into the air, or plants turning brown for no reason.
There is also one very important tool your family can add to your home. It is called a natural gas alarm, and it can warn you about a leak even before your nose notices the smell.
Your Gas Alarm – This special device can give you an early warning, so you have time to get outside and stay safe.

STEP 2
Use Your Detective Tools
STEP 3
Help Your Family Install a Gas Alarm
Be Prepared
DeeDee knows a gas alarm only works if it is in the right place and ready to go. Ask a grown-up to put one close to where natural gas is used, such as in the kitchen or laundry room. It should be on the ceiling or high on the wall where gas will rise. Make sure everyone in the family knows what the alarm sounds like so they can act quickly.
Create a Safety Plan
DeeDee likes to be ready before an emergency happens, and you can too. Work with your family to make a plan for what to do if there is a gas leak. Practice getting to your safe meeting spot just like you would for a fire drill. Drawing a simple map of your home can help everyone remember the fastest way to get outside.
STEP 4
Practice Like a Fire Drill
Know Your Gas Alarm
Detectives are always listening for important clues. If you hear your natural gas alarm, it means gas could be in the air. That’s your cue to get out fast and tell a grown-up

Stay Safe
When a gas leak happens, DeeDee moves fast to get everyone to safety. If you smell gas or hear the alarm, stop what you are doing and leave the house right away. Take everyone with you, including pets, and go to your family’s safe meeting spot outside. Once you are safe, tell a grown-up to call 911 or the gas company. Never turn on lights, use electronics, or try to find the leak yourself.

Hear the Beep, Time to Leap
STEP 7
Review and Share What You Know
Spread the Word
DeeDee believes the best detectives share their skills with others. Talk with your family about what you have learned and make sure everyone knows the clues, the tools, and the steps to stay safe. Teaching a friend or neighbor about natural gas safety can help keep more people safe.
